Rationale
CoinMarketCap’s mission is simple: give users the most reliable information to choose exchanges and tokens with confidence. To do that, we design metrics that cut through noise and expose what matters. The Web Traffic Factor is one such measure.
Exchanges were once ranked by reported volumes. But inflated numbers distorted the picture. We returned to first principles: what data reflects genuine activity? In the absence of wash trading, volume remains a useful signal, driven by two forces—traders and liquidity. Liquidity we capture with our proprietary Liquidity Score. The number of traders is harder. Asking exchanges directly would invite manipulation, so we turned to a proxy: web traffic. A strong substitute for user count, it reveals where real participation flows.
Methodology
CoinMarketCap’s Web Traffic Factor takes into account various factors before arriving at a final output score. We track the numerous data points provided by various web traffic solutions (such as SimilarWeb and Ahrefs) before arriving at a final score. Some of these data points include pageviews, unique visitor count, bounce rate, time-on-site, relative ranking and keyword searches on major search engines.
Multifactor Data Points
The Web Traffic Factor aggregates data from leading analytics providers—such as SimilarWeb and Ahrefs. Inputs include page views, unique visitors, bounce rates, time on site, relative ranking, and keyword searches. Each element is weighted:
- Pageviews
- Unique visitor count
- Bounce rate
- Time-on-site
- Relative ranking
- Keyword searches - we tracked the search engine ranking of exchanges for a select pool of keywords (for example, “cryptocurrency exchange,” “bitcoin exchange,” “cryptocurrency trading,” etc.)
Scores are scaled from 0 to 1,000. The top exchange anchors the scale at 1,000, while others are ranked relative to it. High scores signal high traffic and, by extension, high user engagement. Updated monthly, the metric evolves with the market.
